Application Deadline May 14, 2010This exciting new summer program offers select undergraduate playwrights, directors and actors an opportunity to spend six weeks living and working in New York immersed in the ensemble process and the world of the NYC's theatre professionals while earning
six college credits.
Participants form a collaborative ensemble which creates and develops new works
from their own theatrical and personal vision.
ACTORS
As part of the Conservatory sessions, actors work from the source on new material. At the end of the program, you will have two new audition monologues developed in collaboration with resident playwrights, and the chance to perform at least three new works of both professional and SCP company playwrights.
PLAYWRIGHTS
See your work come to life with SCP resident actors ready to support and help shape your vision. Develop new material, write for an existing company, observe professional writers in the development process and hone your collaborative skills.
DIRECTORS
Work on new material from SCP company writers, and help to develop and deepen existing pieces from member playwrights, be mentored by professional Repertory Directors.
In addition to Conservatory sessions, students will participate in the following:
AUDITION AND BUSINESS SAVVY SEMINAR
Every Saturday morning, SCP company members will gather at the Theatre Row Studios to work on audition techniques and business protocol.
GUEST SEMINARS
With well-known writers, directors, actors and designers from the ranks of the famed Ensemble Studio Theatre who will share their experiences in the field.
WEEKLY THEATRE EXCURSIONS
Take a look at what is new and happening in the New York City theatre with weekly visits to New Play Festivals, Broadway and Off-Broadway offerings as part of the program.
LIVE IN NEW YORK
Housing (optional) at NYAP’s building in Chelsea. (Classes are taught a short distance away in the Theatre District)
Students participating in the Summer Conservatory Program (SCP) for six college credits will meet with NYAP’s theatre advisor regularly; complete a seminar on auditioning and theatre business; and keep a journal to record, examine, contemplate, inquire, challenge and integrate the various elements covered by the program of study.
About Ensemble Studio Theatre . . .
Ensemble Studio Theatre’s goal to
develop new American plays has resulted in a record of achievement that
rivals any theater in the U.S. in terms of quantity and quality of
output, with a total of more than 6,000 plays developed and produced
since 1972 featuring many of the finest playwrights, directors and
performers working in the theater.
There are currently more than 500
members who make EST their artistic home including, John Patrick
Shanley, Christopher Durang, Cassandra Medley, Jose Rivera, Danny
Devito, Richard Dreyfuss, and Christine Lahti. Conservatory teachers

CREDIT, APPLICATION & FEES
The Summer Conservatory Program (SCP) carries 6 credits conferred through Ohio Wesleyan University NYAP’s managing college. Grades for the New York Arts Program semester are on a pass/fail system, unless the home campus specifically requests letter grades.
At the end of the semester, the New York Arts Program forwards the evaluation and transcript to Ohio Wesleyan University, for transfer to the home college.
Credit Breakdown:
Conservatory (30 hours per week) = 4 semester hour credits
Audition Clinic Seminar = 1 credit
Journal = 1 credit
TOTAL = 6 credits

Eligibility & Application Process:
The program requires collaboration and openness, and is geared toward undergraduates in acting, director and playwriting who have demonstrated a serious commitment. Students seeking credit must obtain permission from their Off Campus study office and two letters of recommendation from faculty that comment on her/his ability and preparation for this kind of work and ability to function in a collaborative setting.
The applicant is required to submit and resume and a brief essay about their interest in this program and may submit relevant supplementary material. Applicants will be contacted and will be encouraged to come to New York for a meeting with NYAP and EST faculty.

Tuition and Fees:
Tuition: $6,000 for participation with academic credit; or $3,500 without creditHousing: $1,500 (Optional)Total: $7,500
Students not seeking credit should contact NYAP regarding fees.
Other expenses: Students are responsible for their meals and local transportation. NYAP’s residence has fully equipped kitchens.
BILLING PROCEDURES:
A $100 deposit for housing confirmation is paid directly to the New York Arts Residence with returned housing questionnaire. Ohio Wesleyan University bills home campuses prior to the semester or term; the home campus then bills the student or parent for tuition and housing. Bills are sent to students prior to the beginning program.
